Left on time around 9:00 am. Weather was perfect. Drove across Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It was a beautiful day. I stopped for some household items at the Queenstown outlet mall then again in Cambridge for some groceries. Arrived at Cherrystone Campground on Virginia’s Eastern Shore around 6:30. The Airstream is handling like a charm. Filled up with gas at Fort Meade Shell station 54.6 gallons $74.75; mileage on the Airstream was 20392.
About 10 miles south of Cherrystone is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel across the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. $14.00 to take the Airstream across 17 miles of water. Stopped at the restaurant and fishing pier in the middle of the bay. Interesting maneuvering the Airstream around the little island in the middle of the bay. Drove around Norfolk and Portsmouth on their beltway and on to Scotland, VA. where I boarded the first ferry of the trip to Jamestown, VA. Spent a couple of hours at Jamestown before turning in at Jamestown Beach Campground.
Not much travel today. Drove the 10 miles from Jamestown to Williamsburg, and parked at the visitor’s center. Bought a one day ticket to Colonial Williamsburg. Toured the Governors Palace and most other buildings in Williamsburg. It rained for about a half hour around 4:00. I had left the vents and a couple windows open, so had to dash back to the parking lot to solve that problem. Temperature dropped about 20 degrees after the rain from about 60 to about 40. Had a great dinner at night at Christiana Campbell’s Tavern.
Drove the entire length of the Colonial Parkway from Jamestown to Yorktown (about 31 miles). Toured the Yorktown battlefield and then drove across the James River Bridge and on to Virginia Beach. Checked in at the Holiday Inn Travel Park. Had a little trouble with one of the window blinds, but almost all other systems are working well. Getting good clean water, good heat at night. The dash a/c does not work, but I haven’t missed it yet.
Went to the grocery store again and also a Wal-Mart store in Virginia Beach. Also a Home Depot to get a new bracket to fix the window blind. Worked beautifully. Kinda slept in and got a late start today. Did some laundry and finally got on the internet to read my e-mail and comments on the web-site guest book. I want to thank all those friends and neighbors for the notes in the guestbook. I really enjoyed reading them.
Left Virginia Beach after filling up my propane tanks. Took 17.7 gallons cost $36.99. I expect this will last for a month or more. The propane gas is used to run the furnace at night, the hot water heater and the refrigerator and stove. Also filled up with gas for the first time since leaving home. 66.9 gallons; $88.92. I have driven 538 miles since leaving home. I had figured 400 miles up to this point. Looks like I could be off by 20% of my estimated mileage of 15,354 miles. Drove down to Knott’s Island, NC and boarded the ferry to Currituck. Hit a little bit of rain, but overall it was another very nice day. I stopped at the Wright Brothers Memorial at Kitty Hawk and continued on down the Outer Banks crossing another ferry at Hatteras and spent the night at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore park on Ocracoke Island. No hook-ups. First time I’ve ever done that. Slept like a baby, snug as a bug in a rug.
I forgot that today was the time change. Tried to make the 9:30 ferry from Ocracoke to Cedar Island, but got there a half hour late. Had to wait for the noon ferry, but got on that and sailed 2 and a half hours. Had lunch in the Airstream on the ferry. Very nice trip. Continued on through Camp LeJeune, NC and onto Wilmington. Stopped briefly at the USS North Carolina. Didn’t go aboard, but enjoyed looking at it. Continued on the Myrtle Beach. Checked in at the Apache campground which is where I am located as I write this. This place is located right on the ocean and has 733 campsites and it is almost full.
Sorry I have no pictures yet. I hope to get my digital camera when I get to Dallas in early May. I will be posting pictures after that.
